Tanto tempo fa in una galassia lontana lontana Luke Skywalker è un giovane orfano del pianeta Tatooine che, acquistati due droidi dai predoni, scopre che uno di questi porta dentro di sè il messaggio di una principessa in pericolo. L'unico a poterne sapere qualcosa è il vecchio Obi Wan Kenobi, saggio anziano, ultimo rimasto dell'ordine dei cavalieri Jedi. Kenobi comprende il pericolo e vede in Skywalker qualcosa di più di quello che è, motivo per il quale decide di portarlo con sè. Con l'aiuto del mercenario Han Solo e del wookiee Chewbecca i quattro tentano il salvataggio della principessa entrando a contatto con l'Impero, la grande forza che tiene in scacco la galassia, e con il suo generale più potente, Darth Vader, anch'egli a suo tempo un Jedi.
