Sempre straordinariamente veloce, Sonic the Hedgehog (doppiato da Ben Schwartz), alias Palla Blu, non si trova male nella sua nuova casa, il pianeta Terra. Almeno finché, inavvertitamente, non mette fuori uso la rete di distribuzione elettrica, attirando l’attenzione del genio malefico e super-sfigato Dottor Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Ora, è super-cattivo contro super-Sonic, in una corsa esaltante attraverso il globo per impedire a Robotnik di usare il potere unico di Sonic per dominare il mondo. Sonic e il Signore delle Ciambelle, ovvero lo sceriffo Tom Wachowski (James Marsden), sono il team che salverà il pianeta in questa commedia d’avventura a tecnica mista che piacerà a tutta la famiglia.
