I Metallica sono un gruppo musicale heavy metal statunitense, formatosi a Los Angeles nel 1981.
Il gruppo venne fondato il 28 ottobre 1981 dal batterista Lars Ulrich e dal cantante e chitarrista James Hetfield. I due, conosciutisi poche settimane prima tramite un annuncio sulla rivista statunitense The Recycler messo da Ulrich, in poche settimane reclutarono il bassista Ron McGovney e alcuni chitarristi transitori, tra cui Brad Parker e Jeff Warner. La loro prima sessione di prove fu sostenuta nel garage di Ulrich da quest'ultimo, insieme ad Hetfield, McGovney e Lloyd Grant.
Il nome del gruppo venne coniato da Lars Ulrich nel 1982, mentre stava aiutando Ron Quintana (agente di spettacolo specializzato nel lancio di gruppi emergenti) a scegliere un nome per una rivista da lui fondata con gli intenti di promuovere gruppi metal e New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Quest'ultimo propose a Ulrich due nomi: Metallica e Metal Mania; Ulrich disse che Metal Mania era un nome che si addiceva meglio a un giornale e decise invece di utilizzare Metallica per denominare il suo nuovo gruppo.
