Il Diritto di Opporsi, film diretto da Destin Daniel Cretton, è la storia di Bryan Stevenson (Michael B. Jordan), un avvocato che ha scelto di impiegare la sua professione per lottare affinché le ingiustizie non rimangano impunite. Dopo la laurea ad Harvard, Bryan decide di rinunciare alle diverse cause remunerative, ma sceglie di intraprendere una strada più difficile e meno battuta. Deciso a difendere tutti coloro che sono stati accusati ingiustamente, si reca ad Alabama, dove lavora fianco a fianco con la collega locale Eva Ansley (Brie Larson).
Il primo caso che il giovane avvocato deve affrontare è un omicidio: una diciottenne è stata uccisa e l'unico sospettato, Walter McMillian (Jamie Foxx), è stato accusato e condannato a morte. Ci sono molte prove a suo favore e soltanto una testimonianza di un criminale, con tanto di movente per mentire, lo incastra. Nonostante ciò, Walter rischia la morte e il motivo è probabilmente legato più al colore della sua pelle che a un reale coinvolgimento nell'omicidio.
