La miniserie in dieci parti è ambientata a Flint City, una cittadina dell'Oklahoma con pochi abitanti, la cui quiete è sconvolta dal ritrovamento del corpo mutilato e abusato dell'undicenne Frankie Peterson. Tutti gli indizi sembrano indicare che il colpevole sia Terry Maitland (Jason Bateman, Ozark), un padre di famiglia, nonché allenatore di baseball della Little League e insegnante d'inglese.
