Il nuovo film della serie venne alla luce dopo un development hell molto intenso: le idee per un remake de Il pianeta delle scimmie risalgono agli anni '80, quando Adam Rifkin fu portato agli studios della 20th Century Fox col desiderio di realizzare un nuovo film sulle scimmie.
Reboot della serie:
Nel 2011 è uscito un nuovo film della saga, L'alba del pianeta delle scimmie, diretto da Rupert Wyatt, prequel e reboot della serie originale. Il film è interpretato da James Franco e narra la ribellione delle scimmie, guidata dallo scimpanzé geneticamente modificato Cesare (Andy Serkis). È la prima pellicola di una nuova serie di film. Il seguito, Apes Revolution - Il pianeta delle scimmie esce l'11 luglio 2014 negli Stati Uniti e il 30 luglio in Italia; è diretto da Matt Reeves e interpretato nuovamente da Andy Serkis. Nel gennaio 2014 Reeves viene confermato anche per il sequel del film, di cui scriverà la sceneggiatura insieme a Mark Bomback. Peter Chernin, Rick Jaffa e Amanda Silver figurano come produttori. Il film intitolato The War - Il pianeta delle scimmie è uscito nel luglio 2017
