Korn:
Wikipedia: Korn (stylized as KoЯn) is an American nu metal band from Bakersfield, California, formed in 1993. The band is notable for pioneering the nu metal genre and bringing it into the mainstream. Originally formed in 1993 by three members of the band L.A.P.D., Korn's current lineup features founding members James "Munky" Shaffer (rhythm guitar), Reginald "Fieldy" Arvizu (bass), Brian "Head" Welch (lead guitar, backing vocals), and Jonathan Davis (lead vocals, bagpipes), with the addition of Ray Luzier (drums) in 2007, replacing the band's first drummer, David Silveria. Korn made a demo tape, Neidermayer's Mind, in 1993, which was distributed free to record companies and on request to members of the public. Their debut album, Korn, was released in 1994, followed by Life Is Peachy in 1996. The band first experienced mainstream success with Follow the Leader (1998) and Issues (1999), both of which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200. The band's mainstream success continued with Untouchables (2002), Take a Look in the Mirror (2003) and See You on the Other Side (2005). A compilation album, Greatest Hits Vol. 1, was released in 2004, spanning a decade of singles and concluding the band's recording contract with Immortal Records and Epic Records. They signed to Virgin Records, releasing See You on the Other Side in 2005, and an untitled album in 2007. Korn's other recent albums, Korn III: Remember Who You Are (2010) and The Path of Totality (2011), were released via Roadrunner Records, The Paradigm Shift (2013) being released via Prospect Park and Caroline Records. Their latest album, The Serenity of Suffering, was released on October 21, 2016. As of 2012, Korn had sold more than 35 million copies worldwide. Twelve of the band's official releases have peaked in the top ten of the Billboard 200, eight of which have peaked in the top five. Seven official releases are certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), two are certified double platinum, one is certified triple platinum, one is certified five times platinum and two are certified Gold. Korn has released seven video albums and thirty-nine music videos. The band has released forty-one singles, twenty-eight of which have charted. Korn has earned two Grammy Awards out of eight nominations and two MTV Video Music Awards out of eleven nominations.
The Nothing:
Wikipedia: The Nothing is the thirteenth studio album by American nu metal band Korn. The album was released on September 13, 2019 by Roadrunner and Elektra. The album was produced by Nick Raskulinecz. Following the album's release, the band is scheduled to go on tour co-headlined with Alice in Chains. According to the band's lead singer, Jonathan Davis, the title of the album was inspired by a villain from The NeverEnding Story.
MetalSucks Review by Axl Rosenberg: The Nothing, Korn’s thirteenth studio album, begins and ends with frontman Jonathan Davis sobbing. “Why did you leave me?” he asks before breaking down on the opening cut, “The End Begins,” and declares that “I failed you” on the record’s closer, “Surrender to Failure.” Although he never says her name, it’s safe to assume that Davis is addressing his wife, Devin, who died last year. Jesus Heartbroken Christ, under what set of criteria are we to judge The Nothing as a work of art? It’s an expression of grief as much as it’s a collection of songs, and you’d have to be dead inside not to feel for Davis. Suffice it to say, then, that The Nothing is, on the whole, solid. It has enough classic Kornisms to appease longtime fans (e.g., Fieldy’s rubber band bass, disco high hats, screechy guitar effects, vocal patterns that sound like nursery rhymes, etc.), but it’s different enough from vintage stuff to avoid making it feel like the band is stuck in a creative rut. Appropriately, given the subject matter, it’s on the less-heavy side by Korn standards. There’s a fairly clear formula at work here: almost every song starts out aggro, gets moodier and more melodic for the verse/chorus/verse chorus cycle, transitions into a mosh-worthy bridge, throws in one last chorus, and then concludes by repeating the aggro riff which kicked things off. (And those bookend riffs can get pretty heavy, by the way; the one in “Idiosyncrasy,” for example, owes a clear debt to Pantera’s “A New Level.”) That kind of predictability might bug some fans, but most probably won’t find it bothersome, ’cause Korn have embraced their inner pop songwriters here, gifting The Nothing with hooks for days. The choruses are oversized and will likely leave an immediate impression in the mind of the listener, with tracks like “The Darkness is Revealing,” “Finally Free,” “The Ringmaster,” and “[email protected]” being amongst the catchiest songs of the band’s career. Ultimately, The Nothing feels like it only represents one part of the emotional journey Davis will have to undergo while mourning the loss of his wife. When we abruptly lose a loved one, we’re robbed of our chance at closure, and the fact that the album begins as it ends demonstrates that Davis’ arc is not yet complete. It will be interesting to see where Korn go from here.
