26 aprile 1986, ore 01.23'.45''. Durante un test, il reattore numero 4 della centrale nucleare ucraina di Černobyl', situata a pochi chilometri di distanza dal confine con la Bielorussia, esplode, sparando in aria una quantità incredibile di materiale radioattivo.
Mentre i tecnici e gli ingegneri del turno di notte cercano di stabilizzare la situazione e di capire l'entità dei danni, i vigili del fuoco intervengono per spegnere l'incendio. Non molto lontano da lì, a Pryp'jat' - la cittadina-dormitorio sorta proprio per i lavoratori della centrale e per le loro famiglie e situata a soli 3 chilometri di distanza -, migliaia di persone assistono a quello spettacolo letale.
Poche ore dopo, il professor Valery Legasov - il primo vicedirettore dell'Istituto Kurčatov per l'Energia Atomica, uno dei più stimati chimici sovietici di quegli anni - riceve una telefonata dal Cremlino: farà parte della commissione d'inchiesta sull'incidente nucleare più terribile della Storia, il Disastro di Černobyl'.
Insieme a Boris Shcherbina - a capo della commissione governativa istituita dal Cremlino nelle prime ore successive al disastro - e a Ulana Khomyuk - la fisica nucleare bielorussa che per prima, a Minsk, a poche ore dall'esplosione, rileva un'enorme quantità di radiazioni nell'aria -, Legasov fa quanto in suo potere per evitare una seconda esplosione, con conseguente rilascio di materiale radioattivo nella falda acquifera, e per scoprire la verità su cos'è successo quella maledetta notte.
Nonostante lo stesso governo tenti di insabbiare molte cose e di nascondere dietro il "segreto di Stato" quante più informazioni possibili, i tre riusciranno a scoprire la verità, ma farla arrivare al mondo intero si rivelerà una sfida ancora più difficile di quella affrontata a Černobyl'.
