Dans la foulée du dénouement de l'affaire Cora Tannetti, le détective Harry Ambrose est rappelé dans son village natal, loin de New York, pour enquêter sur un nouveau crime particulièrement perturbant : un double meurtre commis par un garçon de 11 ans. Ambrose découvre petit à petit qu'il n'y a rien d'ordinaire chez cet enfant, et que sa ville renferme bien des secrets dont il ignorait tout, le confrontant à des habitants prêts à tout pour les protéger...
