Arduino Buongiorno, impiegato ministeriale, conduce una vita modesta e monotona al fianco di una moglie sempre affaticata e trasandata. Un giorno, però conosce una mondana, Iolanda, e, dopo qualche esitazione, accetta un appuntamento in casa di lei. Ma resta deluso, perché anche se si è recato, all'ora stabilita, all'indirizzo indicatogli, nessuno risponde alle sue ripetute scampanellate. Il giorno dopo, quando legge sui giornali che nell'appartamento di via Padova 46, al quale egli ha bussato ripetutamente, è stata uccisa una mondana e che la polizia cerca attivamente l'assassino, Arduino, che si ricorda di esser stato osservato con curiosità dagli inquilini del palazzo, è preso dal panico. I suoi sonni sono agitati e pieni di incubi e quando per caso incontra una compagna di Iolanda, il suo atteggiamento fa credere alla ragazza che lui sia l'assassino. Piena di simpatia per l'uomo, che, secondo lei, ha ucciso per passione, l ragazza lo mette in contatto con uno pseudo avvocato, che dopo avergli spillato dei soldi, gli consiglia di allontanarsi. Arduino decide di fuggire in Sardegna; ma avendo appreso all'aeroporto che il vero assassino è stato arrestato, torna a casa, ben lieto di poter abbracciare sua moglie, della quale s'accorge d'essere ancora innamorato.
Arduino Buongiorno, ministerial employee, leads a modest and monotonous life alongside an always weary and unkempt wife. One day, however, he knows a socialite, Iolanda, and after some hesitation, accepts an appointment at her house. But he remains disappointed, because even if he went, at the appointed time, to the address indicated to him, nobody answers his repeated bells. The next day, when he reads in newspapers that in the apartment in Via Padova 46, to which he repeatedly knocked, a socialite was killed and that the police actively seek the murderer, Arduino, who remembers being observed with curiosity from the tenants of the building, he is panicked. His sleeps are agitated and full of nightmares and when by chance he meets a girlfriend of Iolanda, his attitude makes the girl believe that he is the killer. Full of sympathy for the man, who, according to her, killed by passion, the girl puts him in touch with a pseudo lawyer, who after having stolen some money, advises him to get away. Arduino decides to flee to Sardinia; but having learned at the airport that the real murderer has been arrested, he returns home, happy to be able to hug his wife, of whom he realizes that he is still in love.
