Czwarta część sagi o Kratosie, wojowniczym spartiacie rzucającym wyzwanie olimpijskim bogom. Tym razem opowieść cofa się do czasu, kiedy Kratos wciąż pozostawał człowiekiem, będąc wciąż wojownikiem walczącym w imię Aresa. W God of War: Wstąpienie ponownie wcielamy sie w potężnego spartiatę wykorzystującego w walce podwójne ostrza przymocowane do łańcuchów. Gra jest prequelem serii, jej fabuła została umieszczona w czasie poprzedzającym starcie z Aresem, w wyniku którego Kratos zajął miejsce boga wojny na górze Olimp. Autorzy postanowili wyraźniej zaakcentować wszelkie rozterki i emocje towarzyszące herosowi. Bohatera poznajemy w czasie, kiedy tuż po podstępnym wmanewrowaniu go przez Aresa w zabójstwo własnej rodziny zostaje uwięziony w ogromnym więzieniu Tytanów, przeznaczonym dla potępionych. Krates popadł w szaleństwo, skazany na dożywocie, w trakcie którego jego jedynymi towarzyszkami mają pozostawać Furie. To jednak nie wystarczy, aby ostatecznie złamać psychicznie tak potężnego wojownika, jakim stał się Kratos. Nie w przypadku, kiedy spartiacie pozostała nadzieja na dokonanie zemsty. Zarówno na Aresie, jak i pozostałych bogach Olimpu. Autorzy ze studia Sony w Santa Monica nie zmienili zasadniczo stylu rozgrywki znanego z poprzednich części, aczkolwiek poddali mechanikę walki pewnym zmianom mającym za zadanie odświeżyć formułę serii. Nie zabrakło również licznych minigier środowiskowych polegających na odpowiednim manipulowaniu elementami otoczenia. Czymś zupełnie innowacyjnym zaś jest wprowadzenie nieliniowej fabuły. Nowością w serii jest również tryb multiplayer, w którym wziąć udział może nawet do ośmiu graczy. Zarówno w trybie lokalnym, jak i przez internet. Twórcy przygotowali kilka trybów rozgrywki, w tym drużynowe, w trakcie których grający będą reprezentować jednego z greckich bogów - Aresa, Zeusa, Pesejdona lub Hadesa.
