Il film si apre con gli eventi accaduti subito dopo la nascita del protagonista della serie, Inuyasha.
Takemaru Setsuna, capitano delle guardie della madre di Inuyasha, Izayoi, segretamente innamorato di lei, decise di ucciderla poco prima dell'arrivo del Grande Demone Cane, padre di Inuyasha, poiché non riusciva a sopportare l'idea che colei che amava avesse partorito un demone.
Il padre di Inuyasha, mortalmente ferito al petto dallo scontro con il suo più grande nemico Ryūkotsusei, arrivò e riportò in vita la sua amata con Tenseiga.
Sfidato in combattimento da Takemaru, il Generale Cane disse ad Izayoi di scappare con suo figlio, al quale dà il nome Inuyasha,
e le consegnò la rossa Veste del Cane di Fuoco per proteggere lei ed il figlio dal palazzo, ormai completamente in fiamme...
