Straordinaria performance dei due attori protagonisti in un film in cui la dolcezza è la cifra narrativa principale Università di Cambridge, 1963. Stephen è un promettente laureando in Fisica appassionato di cosmologia, "la religione per atei intelligenti". Jane studia Lettere con specializzazione in Francese e Spagnolo. Si incontrano ad una festa scolastica ed è colpo di fulmine, nonché l'inizio di una storia d'amore destinata a durare nel tempo, ma anche a cambiare col tempo. Del resto il tempo è l'argomento preferito di Stephen, che di cognome fa Hawking, e lascerà il segno nella storia della scienza. In particolare, l'uomo persegue l'obiettivo scientifico di spiegare il mondo, arrivando ad elaborare la formula matematica che dia un senso complessivo a tutte le forze dell'universo: quella "teoria del tutto" che dà il titolo al film. La teoria del tutto però non si concentra sull'aspetto accademico o intellettuale della vita di Hawking ma privilegia l'aspetto personale e l'evoluzione parallela di due forze dell'universo: l'amore per la moglie e i figli, e la malattia, quel disturbo neurologico che porterà al graduale decadimento dei muscoli dello scienziato e lo confinerà su una sedia a rotelle.
